a work of mine from last student show

Here it comes baby.  By Friday April 1st, all us art people have to have our best work presentable and ready to hang.  Usually around this time of year everyone is feeling the burn.  First you have to get work done for the show, and then you have to frame it, which is time consuming if you do it yourself, and expensive if you pay for custom frames.

But when you’re done, oh goodness.  It’s wonderful to see the work so presentable and polished.  When everything is said and done you stick a label on the back of each piece with all the info: media, title, name, price, and so on.  Then judging happens and the work that is put in the show is picked.  Then little cards are made to accompany the work when it’s hung.  And finally students sign up and help hang all the work.  Ta-da!  It’s show time.

Everyone gets fancy and comes out to see everything-the students-the teachers-family members-friends-dates, everyone.  In fact, it gets pretty crowded.  Funny memory I just had.  I took a friend of mine to a show one year and we both saw Mick Jagger-or at least a look alike.  I saw him another year too.  This year I will bring paper just in case and maybe I’ll get an autograph.

In case you’re interested in seeing all our sweet work and/or Mick Jagger, I took this paragraph from the Saint Francis site to give you all the necessary info so you can come to the show:

Addy’s Prom Night cont.! February 27, 2011

At about six last night, I had gotten all gussied up for prom night and  a couple of my friends (my dates; students who helped with addy’s too) came and picked me up.  I even got to descend a flight of stairs when this happened. (They were concrete, but it was still pretty sweet.)

The Fort Wayne Museum of Art looked amazing, and there were all kinds of delicious foods out for us.  Everyone was dressed to impress of course in their prom finery–bow ties and pearls abound.  We didn’t have much time to look at the work, but we had helped hang the show (which went off without a hitch) so we had already seen everything.  And then all of us Saint Francis students, and some IPFW students too, had our prom pic taken by a guy with a giant afro.

After the drinking and mingling came to a peak, we all got together and watched the awards being displayed in movie format on a huge projector.  In between categories we got to see lots of bad, goofy, sometimes frightening dancing, which was hilarious and awesome.  Some really spectacular adverting and design too; from self promotional designs, to web design, television commercials, logo design, everything from all sorts of agencies in the Fort Wayne area.  Agencies like:  One Lucky Guitar, Boyden and Youngblutt, Britton Marketing, BIG, LaBov and Beyond.  Some of the clients you might recognize like Parkview, the Indiana State Fair, Fort Wayne Airport, and Vera Bradley.

Then came the student category.  One of our students got around six or seven addy awards!  AND my date won best in show for the students!  AND I got a gold addy for my LGBTQ article about gay bullying leading to suicides among young men!  All in all, Saint Francis completely owned in the student section.

Needless to say it was a magical evening.

Every year ADFED Fort Wayne, which is a local branch of a national advertising federation, gets together and has an awards night.  All sorts of great design around the region is selected, hung up, and prizes are announced.  This year the ceremony is being held at the Fort Wayne Museum Art in down town Fort Wayne.  They usually have a theme, this year is prom night.  The invitation is as follows:

“You knew it the first time you saw it.  It’s the best work you’ve ever done.  You will never accomplish anything like it the rest of your life.  THIS. IS. THE ONE. And now, on one magical night, you can proclaim your love to the world.  It will be just you and your work–together for all to see.”

There is a student category too.  A bunch of Saint Francis students get together and help hang the show before and then get in free.  I have never been to one, but I’m helping hang, tear down, and going this year, and its supposed to be a bunch of fun.  Tomorrow night–Feb. 26th.   I will write a blog entry all about it too if you’re interested.

Down the Line at the Embassy Theatre February 20, 2011

This Saturday night Down the Line, a concert held each year at Fort Wayne’s embassy theatre was held hosting five local bands covering the music of Tom Petty, The Beatles, The Cure, Earth Wind and Fire, and John Mellencamp.  The shows sell out every year and this year was no exception.  The music was great and everyone was getting into it.

The coolest part about it though, (at least for me and my 2D class) was we got to make the projections that went up as the bands played.  We all did at least two graphic pieces and they all looped while the band played.  I did two for The Cure performed by The Wooden Satellites.  Here’s how they turned out:

Here are all the bands that played and the artists they covered:

Kill the Rabbit – Tom Petty

Wooden Satellites – The Cure

Urban Legend – Earth, Wind & Fire

Dash Rip Rock – John Mellencamp

David Todoran and Kenny Taylor – The Beatles

Abominable Snow persons and beasts

Dear University of Saint Francis,

Thank you ever so much for closing from 12 noon Tuesday to 12 noon Thursday.  I got to miss every  class except creative writing.  I probably wouldn’t have skidded into a snow bank while going to class since I live on campus, but all the commuters could have.   However, considering all the snow mountains the plows made, I might have suffocated in an avalanche or frozen to death walking from Bonzel (residence hall) to the art building.   So thank you, thank you, you glorious institution you.  I haven’t even mentioned all the homework I had the opportunity to get to caught up on but didn’t.  Hallelujah!

With inexpressible affection,

Christine

If you ever wondered what a Snowpocalypse is like on a college campus (at least Saint Francis’s campus) here is the big scoop:

1.1 You hope and pray and pray and hope the night before that you will be given that extra day to do homework.  Gossip about it to your friends and check the school’s website constantly for that glorious news.

1.2  They have about a few ways of informing us students about cancellations and delays.  One: the website.  This time a giant red box was at the top of the website telling us when classes would resume.  Two: they contact everyone via their cellphones with text messages.  And I’m pretty sure word of mouth is big too.  I heard about our first cancellation from someone who checked facebook whose friend posted about the delay after they had heard if from the school.

2. The dining hall actually stayed open!  You would think that the staff that drives here to make us food would stay home but they braved the weather and the school put them up that night in some of our free dorms in Trinity hall.  We made a big banner and hung it in the dining hall with a million signatures and notes of thanks.

3. Slipping and sliding and snow-ball fighting happened, not to mention movie marathons and flocks of residents in the common room.

4. Snuggling with the electric blanked and cups of tea also happened.  Indeed, snow days are AMAZING.  They are also a lot less frequent than snow delays and cancellations in highschool.  In fact this was our first closing all year, and the last one I can remember was two years ago.  Hmm

5. And then you have to move your car out of the parking lot for a while so the plows can get in.

6. And then you have to make a snow person or beast!  I COMMAND IT!  }:)

I’ll admit it.  I only went to two of these four shows so far but I am planning on seeing the others and you should too.  First of all, if you are a bit slow and haven’t seen the amazing newly renovated Fort Wayne Museum of Art,  you definitely should.

Second of all—I can assure you that Maurie Papier’s show is pretty cool and you should definitely see it.  Even if you don’t know anything about art, you will definitely appreciate it.  Since I’m an art major, I have to admit, like all the others, “I had to go, I’m on scholarship.”  But I was actually pretty pumped about this one since I actually got to take Maury for painting before he retired and he’s a really cool guy.  As a side note, I met my two-year roommate in that class too before Residential Life even assigned us to each other.

I did this in Maury's class my freshman year

He works a lot in multimedia, and it looks like he layers a lot of his work and uses different watercolor techniques like salt to create really stunner effects.  His color palette is really freaking pretty, and all his compositions are strong and defined.  He plays with depth a lot too, which is interesting to me.  And he collages a lot things into his work.  What’s probably the most impressive though, is even though he layers all his elements together, they end up making a very solid piece and you can’t quite figure out what he painted and what he added.  Sometimes his images are so clean and well put together you can barely detect the medium.  Not that you need me to egg you on but…. Go Maury!

Community Harvest Food Bank—Feed the Fort October 7, 2010

http://www.communityharvest.org/pages/about.html

In our Design Theory class we have been asked to design a plan for a donor recognition wall for Community Harvest Food Bank.  On Wednesday this week we actually went to the food bank and saw the space where they would put it.  We also toured the building and saw what was being done there.  They plan on expanding the building and the new donor wall is included in this expansion.  The food bank feeds thousands of hungry people in the nine Northeast Indiana counties.

Because of the economy there are more and more people who need assistance with food and so the demand is growing.  A lot of their storage areas were bare.  Here at Saint Francis we collect food for Feed the Fort and it was a reminder that organizations like Community Harvest need all the help they can get.  Even if one person doesn’t have much to give (I’m a college student for crying out loud) it does help when everyone gives what they can.  In our classes we collect loose change and last year it actually totaled pretty high.

detail by Marie Gardeski

This summer I finally got a membership to Artlink which is an organization located downtown dedicated to the arts.  It has several galleries and a bunch of shows all the time.  I admit that I don’t know much about it and have in fact never been.  My teachers have been mentioning it most of the time I’ve been going to Saint Francis so finally I am a member for the low, low price of ten bucks.

I got my first invite to a show via the mail last week.  This show is called Local Vignettes: The Fort Exhibition which basically means six local artists have constructed forts and you get to see them.  I have it on good authority you can expect some sort of mashed potato construction.  So if you find this intriguing you should come out tomorrow night, the 8th of October.  This is the opening reception and it lasts from 6pm-9.  The show stays up until October 20th.

Their next show involves toys and book illustrations.  I’m actually planning on entering this one.  I have to notify Artlink of my participation by this Sunday and the opening recption is October 29th.

AND here is a handy LINK to ArtLink’s website:  http://www.artlinkfw.com/

AND there’s a handy little box to the left of the screen with hours and gallery location.
